Yo, check this out. I found this pic of a penny and it got me thinkin’ about coins and stuff. So, I did a little research and thought I’d share with y’all what I learned about ol’ Abe and the rest of those fancy pieces of metal we be spending all day.

Takin’ a Closer Look at the Penny

A Penny is Equal to One CentFirst off, let’s talk about the penny. Some people think it ain’t worth nothin’, but it actually is. It’s called a cent, and it’s a part of our American dollar system. One cent may not seem like a lot of money to some people, but think about it like this: if you had 100 pennies, you’d have one whole dollar!

The penny has been around for a long time too. It was first minted way back in 1787, and since then, it’s been through a whole bunch of changes. Back in the day, pennies were made of copper, but now they’re mostly made of zinc with a thin copper coating. They still got the same image of Abraham Lincoln on the front though - that’s been there since 1909.

Nickels, Dimes, and Quarters

Choose your Coin - Nickel, Dime, QuarterBut the penny ain’t the only coin we got in America. There’s also the nickel, dime, and quarter. The nickel is worth five cents, and it’s got Thomas Jefferson on the front. Dimes are worth ten cents, and they got Franklin D. Roosevelt on ’em. And quarters are worth 25 cents with George Washington’s face.

Now, the nickel and dime is made up of a nickel-copper alloy, but quarters got some silver in ’em. That’s why some people collect quarters - ‘cause they might be worth more than just 25 cents if they’re old or rare or somethin’.

Half Dollars and Silver Dollars

Stack of Half-Dollar coinsBut wait, there’s more! We also got half dollars and silver dollars, but they’re not used as much these days. Half dollars ain’t worth 50 cents no more - they stopped making those in 2001, so if you find one, it might be worth holdin’ onto. And silver dollars, as you might guess, are made of silver. They ain’t been made since the 1970s, but some people still collect ’em.

What the Heck is a Sacagawea?

Sacagawea CoinNow, here’s a coin you might not have seen before - the Sacagawea. This is a dollar coin that was introduced in the year 2000, and it’s got a Native American woman named Sacagawea on the front. Some people like to collect these coins ‘cause they’re rare and not used much in everyday life.

And finally, there’s the presidential dollar coins. These are also made of gold-colored metal, and they got pictures of former presidents on ’em. They ain’t as well-known as the other coins, but you might see ’em if you go to the bank and take a peek inside your change purse.

So Many Coins, So Little Time

Assortment of coinsPhew, that was a lot of information to go through! But don’t you feel smarter now that you know about all the different coins we got in America? Just remember to check the dates and mint marks and all that fancy stuff if you wanna get serious about it. Who knows, maybe you’ll find a rare treasure worth a whole lot more than face value!
