What You’ll Need

Birdhouse PlansBefore you get started, you’ll need a few supplies:

  • Wood (we recommend pine or cedar)
  • Measuring tape
  • Saw
  • Sandpaper
  • Drill
  • 1 inch spade bit
  • Screws
  • Wood glue
  • Paint or stain (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Once you have everything you need, follow these step-by-step instructions:

  1. Start by cutting your wood into the following pieces:
  • Two 7.5 x 7.5 inch pieces for the roof
  • Two 6 x 8 inch pieces for the sides
  • One 4 x 4 inch piece for the bottom
  • One 7.5 x 7.5 inch piece for the back
  • One 4 x 8 inch piece for the front
  1. Using your sandpaper, smooth any rough edges or surfaces on your wood pieces.
  2. Now it’s time to drill the entrance hole! Using your spade bit, drill a 1 inch hole in the center of your front piece of wood.
  3. Glue your sides to the bottom piece of wood. Make sure the bottom piece is flush with the sides.
  4. Attach the back piece to the sides and bottom using screws.
  5. Attach the front piece to the sides and bottom using screws. Make sure the entrance hole is facing outward!
  6. Attach the two roof pieces to the top of the birdhouse using screws.
  7. Now you’re ready to paint or stain your birdhouse! This step is optional, but it can add some personality and color to your creation.
  8. Finally, find a good spot to hang your new birdhouse! Make sure it’s in a place where birds can easily access it, but also where it’s protected from the elements. And there you have it! You and your kids have completed a fun and useful project that will bring joy to both you and your feathered friends.
